The Domäne cultivates an area of arable land of approx. 250 hectares. One of the most important requirements for an ecological farming cycle is the diversified rotation of crops stretching over a period of seven years. It starts with two years of grass-clover mixture/lucerne, followed by two years of cereals, usually wheat and rye. Then come roots and tuberous plants, e.g. potatoes and maize. The rotation of crops ends with another two years of cereals, mainly winter barley and triticale, a hybrid of wheat and rye.

As needed, peas and broad beans are planted in between. Apart from their usage as animal feed, these leguminosae, including grass-clover mixtures/lucerne, are cultivated to improve the soil. Their roots grow deeper than the roots of cereals, thus enriching the soil to a considerable extent with nitrogen taken from the air. By this means, the fertility of the soil is preserved, its structure is improved and the basis for the growth of healthy plants is provided.
